As our populations grow, being aware of the environment becomes more and more important – as should Earth Day.

These crafts are made from recyclable materials or help with growing new plants.

Whatever we can do to help our planet sustain itself!

Here we have created a mobile, of our earth and sun. This craft is made out of newspaper and a paper plate (all recycled materials).

We were not completely accurate with our continents but you can be, and make it into a geography lesson as well!

Paper Mache Earth Day Mobile Craft

Paper plates are biodegradable and easy to recycle, so is newspaper. These earth day crafts for kids are a great way to recycle, learn your geography and make your very own mini world to show your love for our planet.

Craft Supplies:
  • Newspaper
  • White paper
  • Paper Plate
  • Paint (Green, Blue, Yellow)
  • Paint brush
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Balloon
  • String (or fishing line)

Step #1:

Paint your paper plate with yellow paint. Cover the plate completely.

Set it aside to dry.

Step #2:

Blow up a balloon to the size you want your earth.

Step #3:

Cut up the newspaper into strips.

Also, do this with the white paper.

Step #4:

Create your mache mixture. This is 3 parts glue to 1 part water.

Dip a piece of newspaper in the mixture and allow it to soak for a few seconds. Place this on your balloon.

Repeat this process until the entire balloon is covered, except for the knot.

Set it in the sink to dry completely.

Step #5:

Once the balloon is dry, pop the balloon and pull it out.

Repeat the process you did with the newspaper, but this time do it with white paper. This makes it easier to paint on.

When you go to place the paper over your hole from the balloon knot, place a piece of fishing line (or sting) underneath the paper.

Allow this to dry.

Step #6

With a pencil, sketch out where you want your continents.

Paint the ocean areas blue and the continents green.

Allow this to dry.

*You may need a second coat of paint.

Step #7

Punch a hole in each side of your painted paper plate.

Step #8

Cut your paper plate into the shape of a sun. Adding rays around it. Make sure your holes are in the center of a ray.

Tie your fishing line through these holes. One on each side.

Tie the two ends together at the top.

Now, you have a mini world to hang in your home or classroom. Show your love for your planet!

Why don’t you look around the house at other things you can recycle and make crafts out of. It turns craft time into even more of a challenge!

On a side note, a fun experiment to try – on the topic of Earth Day.
