Summer is coming so there is no better time to learn how to draw a sunflower easily! This easy tutorial will help you complete my sunflower drawing for kids!
Easy Sunflower Drawing for Kids
I’m always planning drawing activities for my kids to do and since it’s almost Summer these pretty sunflowers seem the perfect sketch for them to recreate.
These are actually very simple to sketch when you break it down into small steps, making this Summer activity suitable for young kids as well as older artists!
Obviously you can add other details if you wish, such as other flowers and a green garden in the background!
Why not use your completed picture as the front of a Mother’s Day card or even a greeting card for someone with a Summer birthday.

Let’s get started with my easy sunflower drawing step by step below. Please let me know how long it takes you to complete this in the comments below!
Step by Step Sunflower Drawing
Step 1:
Draw a small circle in the middle of your paper. This will be the center of your sunflower!
Step 2:
Draw six (6) vertical lines around the circle and keep equal distance in between them.
Step 3:
Start drawing your first petal coming out of the circle – kind of like a teardrop shape.
Step 4:
Draw another petal on the opposite side. Make sure it’s the same size and shape.
Step 5:
Similarly, draw rest of the petals.
Step 6:
Now draw petals in between the ones you’ve already made to fill out the shape – now it’s starting to look like a flower!
Step 7:
Keep adding more petals all around until you have a full, round flower shape.
Step 8:
Time to draw the stem! Start with a curved line coming down from the flower.
Step 9:
Make the stem thicker by drawing a second curved line next to the first one and connecting the bottom.
Step 10:
Draw one leaf on the side of the stem – just a small almond shape with a pointy tip.
Step 11:
Draw the veins inside the leaf. Your step by step sunflower drawing should look as below (provided you have followed the instructions carefully).
Step 12:
Use a black thin tip marker or gel pen to draw over the outlines of the flowers, and details in the petals.
Step 13:
Use a brown color to fill in the centre circle of the sunflower.
Step 14:
Now use a light yellow color for the inside the borders of the sunflower petals.
Step 15:
Carefully fill in the petals with yellow color.
Step 16:
Color the stem and leaf using green color.
Step 17:
Then, use a darker yellow shade to color the inner sides of the sunflower petals to give it a shade.
