Christmas lantern craft for preschoolers are a great way to keep the little ones busy until the big day, and Santa’s arrival.

It is always good to have craft ideas for all age ranges, including some simple crafts that can be completed by even the littlest of the little ones.

We love to not only craft, but also to re-use items that would otherwise end up in the trash or recycle bin. 

Some great things to recycle for crafts are things like:

  • Paper rolls (from paper towel or toilet paper)
  • Empty jars (from pickles, jams, etc)
  • Egg Cartons
  • Tin cans
  • And any item you can think of, be creative!

For this coming craft we have used an empty jar.

Christmas Crafts for Preschoolers: Christmas Lantern Craft

Craft Supplies:
  • Empty jar (pick a size you want for a lantern)
  • Tissue paper (variety of colors, we have used white and gold)
  • Glue
  • Water
  • Container
  • Scissors
 Time to Complete:
  • 15-30 minutes, plus overnight drying.

Age Recommendation:

  • 4+ years old.

Step #1:

Pick out your jar – use a larger or smaller, all depending on what size of lantern you want to create.

Step #2:

Create a glue/water mixture – the same mixture you would use for a paper mache project. In a bowl, mix half water and half gun. 

Cut up squares of white tissue paper. Dip a piece into the mixture you made. Once it is coated place it on your jar. 

Repeat this process until your jar is coated in white. 

Step #3:

Take another color of tissue paper – we chose gold. Cut out a variety of Christmas themed shapes. 

You can make things like bells, stars, candy canes, ornaments, etc.

Step #4:

Dip a piece into your glue/water mixture and coat it evenly. Place these randomly around your jar. 

Now, it is just a matter of waiting until it is all dried up. Usually this will be in a few hours at most. 

This is one of our super easy Christmas crafts for preschoolers and it makes a great decoration to keep around the house. 

The final piece is simply add a tea light candle and light it!
