Paper plates are great for parties – saves on the dish washing. They are also great for crafting too! I always but the plain white ones and almost always have stacks left over.

We’ve created a ton of great crafts from simple paper plates, like our paper plate butterfly.

After you have made this cute butterfly craft we have a few more suggestions below for great crafts made from paper plates. The opportunities are endless with these materials and they will keep your kids going with crafts all year long.

How to make a Paper Plate Butterfly

I have tried to make this as simple as possible but I am sure you might want to mix it up a bit and add your own twist to this craft.

Butterfly Paper Plate Craft for Kids

Active Time: 40 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Difficulty: easy

This easy Butterfly paper plate craft for kids is recommended for school age children of 5 years and above. Of course younger kids can do this too with lots of help from Mum.

Materials

  • Paper plate
  • Crayons, or pencil crayons
  • Pipe cleaner
  • Googly eyes
  • Pom pom
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Instructions

Step #1:

Cut a V shape out of two sides of your paper plate. You can round them slightly to help make the wing shapes for our butterfly.

Step #2:

Fold the paper plate in half from the center of the wings.

Step #3:

Take a pipecleaner and wrap it around a pencil, create a loop then turn around and wrap the rest back down the pencil.

Glue this onto the center of your paper plate.

Step #4:

Color both of your wings with crayons, or pencil crayons.

Wondering what we used to create this? Its a product called Ezyshaid and it is great for creating a blended color look. We had a ton of fun with this product.

If you will be hanging your butterfly afterwards you can also color the back side of its wings too.

Step #5:

Add a face to your butterfly. This can be done by simply gluing some googly eyes and a pom pom to the loop part of your pipecleaner. We used big googly eyes to give our butterfly a more cartoon look.

Now you can add a string to the top of the pipe cleaner to hang your butterfly.

Maybe a magnet to the back and place it on the fridge.

Another great use of a paper plate!

Notes

You could also use patterned paper plates for a really jazzy butterfly! We have some Princess plates in the house and might use these for something different.

Now that you have completed this you might be hooked on butterfly crafts!! If so I know you will love my pipecleaner butterfly idea.
