Popsicle Stick Puppets for Pretend Play

Let’s make some easy popsicle stick puppets that will allow you to act out your very own play! Now building with wood, nails and a hammer can be quite dangerous, so we’ve created a safer way to still use some wood to craft.

We’ve created puppets out of popsicle sticks!

First, before we get started let’s take a few minutes and create a play.

This is your time to get creative, make a story about anything you wish. You will make your puppets based on your story.

For our examples, we decided we would re-enact a fairy tale with a princess and a frog.

Of course, every princess needs a mode of transportation so we will create a horse too. You could also use this popsicle stick princess

How to Make Popsicle Stick Puppets

With these easy wood crafts we will show you a few ways you can create your puppets – using a variety of different supplies.

Craft Supplies:

  • Popsicle sticks
  • Pipe Cleaner
  • Googly Eyes
  • Craft foam
  • Construction Paper
  • Cardboard
  • Pom Poms
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers

Using Craft Foam for Your Princess Popsicle Stick Puppets

Princess popsicle stick puppet Our first puppet is our main character, our princess. For this one we used craft foam and a marker.

Here’s all you need to do:

  • Cut out your princess, piece by piece. Create her dress, hat and shoes out of a pink color. Cut out her hair with brown or yellow. Lastly, cut out hands and a face.
  • Glue all these pieces together and allow them to dry.
  • Add some eyes with a marker (or your could use googly eyes).
  • Glue her to a popsicle stick.

Now she’s ready for her debut. These instruction are the same no matter the character you are creating, just cut out the different pieces from craft foam and glue them together.

Frog Puppets out of Pom Poms & Pipe Cleaners

frog popsicle stick puppet craft The next of our easy popsicle stick puppets is our frog, or any other animal character you may have, we decided to use pom poms and pipe cleaners.

This can be adapted for your characters. Use craft foam, construction paper and other supplies as added details.

Here’s what we did:

  • Glue two small green pom poms on top of a larger green one. This is the main body of our frog.
  • We glued two googly eyes, one in each of the smaller pom poms.
  • Cut out a mouth from red craft foam and glued it into the center of the large green pom pom.
  • Cut four equal lengths of pipe cleaner, bent them into a V shape and glued two on each side.
  • Glue him onto a popsicle stick, we used a green one to match the frog.

Using Cardboard and Markers for your Horse Popsicle Stick Puppet

horse popsicle stick puppet craft Our princess needs a mode of transportation and this horse will do a great job. You can use cardboard and markers to make any character of your play as well.

This one is simple:

  • Cut out the shape of your character.
  • Color any of the details with a marker.
  • You can also add some things, like our saddle, by cutting out pieces of construction paper.
  • Add some extra personality to it by using googly eyes.

Glue your horse onto a popsicle stick and its ready for the play!

Now this process can be repeated for all the characters you need. You can also mix and match with other crafts – such as the Paper Bag Princess craft. This is also a puppet which you can add into your story!

You can also mix and match the supplies you use, or you can use them all. The object of this craft is to be creative and unique – just like your story and play will be!

I have pipe cleaner butterflies that you could also easily attach to a popsicle stick and use them for pretend play!
